'Click It or Ticket' campaign starts today

Advertiser Staff

If you don't click it, you will get a ticket while driving the streets of Hawai'i over the next few weeks.

The annual "Click It or Ticket" safety campaign kicks off today and runs through June 3, with four county police departments enforcing the seat belt and child safety laws.

Police statewide will give $92 tickets to seat belt violators. All drivers and front-seat passengers need to wear seat belts.

Also, children 4 and younger have to ride in child safety seats. Violators of the Hawai'i Child Passenger Restraint law are required to attend a four-hour class and could be fined $100 to $500, depending upon the number of offenses.

Police said this year's campaign will focus on the lowest-rated groups of unbuckled drivers and passengers: 18- to 25-year olds and drivers of pickup trucks.

Last year, the state issued 3,337 citations for seat belt violations and 60 for child-safety infractions.
