It's the second year that UH students will screen their works in Shanghai in a key exchange with ACM, according to ACM chair Tom Brislin. "It demonstrates not only our global reach but also the appeal of our talented students' films that tell original Hawai'i-based stories that bridge cultural boundaries," he said in a statement.
The six film directors and their works: Jay Hubert, "Dao;" Ty Sanga, "Follow the Leader;" Henry Mochida, "Chopsticks;" Brian Makanoa, "Eve;" Tod Barnett, "Fun in the Park;" and Russell Blanchard, "A Birthday With Grandpa."
The films by Hubert, Sanga and Mochida previously have been screened in several U.S. festivals, including the highly regarded VC Asian American FilmFest in Los Angeles. Hubert also took top college honors at the Houston International WorldFest. The trio's works, along with Makanoa's, also have been showcased in the 2006 Hawaii International Film Festival.
The students will receive awards from the Roy and Hilda Takeyama Foundation Fund at ACM to cover airfare.
The SMART program also brings Shanghai University students and their films to HIFF.
