Lance Watanabe has been named 'Iolani varsity softball head coach.

For the past four years, he's been 'Iolani's batting instructor under Chris Shimabukuro.

Watanabe, a 1982 Waipahu graduate, was the Wai'anae varsity softball coach from 1995-2003 and was named O'ahu Interscholastic Association West Coach of the Year in 1996-97. He also was the All-State Coach of the Year in 1996.

"Lance is a great guy and great coach and I have all the confidence that the 'Iolani softball program is in good hands," Shimabukuro said.

Watanabe is the son of OIA Hall of Fame member Tsuneo Watanabe, who played baseball for Waipahu High and the University of Hawai'i.

"I believe that players and coaches need to understand each other's goals and together must come up with a common team goal," Watanabe said.
