Project earns student honors

Advertiser Staff

A Big Island high school senior has been honored for collecting hundreds of used cellular phones as part of a project to raise money for survivors of domestic violence.

Cheyenne Doronio, a senior at the Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i campus, was presented with the HopeLine Champion Award from Verizon Wireless in a ceremony at the school Thursday.

As part of Doronio's Senior Legacy Project for the school, she collected 483 used cell phones for the HopeLine Program.

The program provides wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and nonprofit organizations that offer programs related to domestic violence.
