Potts, Swail win Honolulu Triathlon

Andy Potts of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Julie Swail of Irvine, Colo., captured the USA Triathlon Elite National Championship by winning the overall titles at yesterday's Honolulu Triathlon.

Potts, 31, finished the 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim, 40-kilometer (24.8-mile) bike and 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) run in 1 hour, 42 minutes, 27 seconds. Swail, 35, won the women's race in 1:52:33.

It was the first triathlon national title for both. They earned spots at this summer's Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and the ITU World Championships in Hamburg, Germany.

Gareth Halverson, 23, was second overall in 1:43:23 and Brian Fleischmann, 29, was third in 1:43:37.

Sarah Haskins, 26, was the second female finisher in 1:52:54 and Laura Bennett, 32, was third in 1:53:12.


GOLF

HAMAMOTO WINS

Professional Jarett Hamamoto shot a 2-under 70 yesterday to win the Kuma Contracting Corp. Kona Open by one stroke over Sean Maekawa at Kona Country Club.

Hamamoto finished at 2-under 142. Maekawa, who won the state high school golf championship last week, shot a 70 and finished at 143.

Amateurs Henry Park and KC Botelho each shot 71s and were tied for third at 144.

First-round leaders Norman-Ganin Asao and Joe Phengsavath shot 75s and finished tied for fifth with Ron Castillo (74) and Pierre-Henri Soero (72) at 145. All four are pros.

FOUR BALL CHAMPIONS

Michael Sato and Jared Sawada defeated Steve Ohira and Marshall Uchida, 5 and 4, yesterday in the 36-hole finals of the Francis Brown Four Ball Tournament at Ala Wai Municipal Golf Course.

Craig and David Watanabe beat Robert Yosailis and Brad Yosaitis, 3 and 2, to win the A flight. Lloyd Tamura and Ron Ongie defeated Andy and Glenn Okita 4 and 3 to capture B flight.

HAWAI'I TEAM SET

The Hawai'i team for the U.S. Championships in Colo-rado Springs, Colo., has been determined.

The lone tournament to the Olympic Trials will be held May 29 to June 9.

Umeda and Ezzo-White are champions, but will not participate. Bruce Kawano is the team manager and regional coordinator, and Jeff McKee and Joel Kim are coaches.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

RING LOSES IN FINAL

Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser beat Matt Olson and Jason Ring, 21-17, 21-12, for their fourth AVP Tour victory of the season yesterday at the Hermosa (Calif.) Beach Open.

Ring is a former University of Hawai'i volleyball player.

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh beat Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder, 21-15, 21-11, for the women's title.
