Awa-Williams named BIIF player of the year

Konawaena High School senior Jazzmin Awa-Williams was named Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I girls basketball player of the year. Awa-Williams led the Wildcats to an 17-0 season that included BIIF and state titles. The Wildcats last won a state title in 2004 when Awa-Williams was a freshman.

Named to the first team were teammates Liana Hanato-Smith and Mana Hopkins, Honoka'a's Keisha Kanekoa and Hilo's Vicky Tagalicod.

Hilo coach Ferdie Masulit was named coach of the year.

In Division II, Hawai'i Prep's Kela Fitzgerald was named player of the year, and her coach Craig Kimura was named coach of the year.

Named to the Division II first team were Hannah Adona of Parker, Kohala's Renee Bautista and Kamehameha-Hawai'i players Kanisha Bello and Tabitha Eseroma.

HPA won the BIIF title, while Kamehameha-Hawai'i won the state Division II title.

All voting was done by league coaches.
