Record 7 UH track and field athletes in West Regionals

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i will send a school-record seven women's track and field athletes to the NCAA West Regionals in Oregon's Hayward Field Friday and Saturday.

Competing for UH this week are Annett Wichmann (javelin and high jump), Novelle Murray (discus), Emily Sheppard (high jump), Mallory Gilbert (high jump), Meghan Weaver (shot put), Thalia Amanakis (400-meter hurdles), and Jessica Trujillo (pole vault).

The meet features the top collegians from Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. The top-five individual event and top-three relay event finishers receive invitations to the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Wednesday-Saturday, June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.

UH's previous best was in 2005 when it sent six athletes to the regionals.

Murray, competing in her fourth West Regional, ranks third nationally in the discus and 21st in the hammer, but she will concentrate only on the discus this weekend.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off their best scoring total at the Western Athletic Conference Championship. UH accumulated 97 points and took home six medals, including three golds — Wichmann (heptathlon), Murray (discus), and Sheppard (high jump).
