Former bus driver indicted in fatal traffic wreck

A former tour bus driver was indicted by an O'ahu grand jury today on a manslaughter charge in connection with a fatal collision in Kahalu'u last year.

Steve Oshiro, 49 at the time, was charged with recklessly killing Corey Voss, 41, of Kane'ohe, who was returning home from surfing when his SUV was struck by the tour bus June 12 last year.

City Deputy Prosecutor Vickie Kapp said Oshiro was driving an empty bus when he crossed the center line on Kamehameha Highway and struck the SUV. She said Oshiro had a collision with a city bus earlier that day and he should have known he was unable to safely operate the bus.

She said as a professional driver of the extremely heavy and dangerous bus on the two-lane highway, Oshiro "should be held to a higher standard of care."

The manslaughter charge carries up to 20 years in prison.

Circuit Judge Derrick Chan approved Kapp's request to set bail for Oshiro at $100,000.
