Kaua'i home in Moloa'a destroyed by fire

Advertiser Staff

A fire last night destroyed a Kaua'i home and garage with an attached storeroom in Moloa'a as firefighters had difficulty reaching the site and also had to pump water from a nearby stream to fight the blaze.

Eleven firefighters and rescue specialists responded to the 11 p.m. alarm and reported the fire under control at 1:17 a.m. today.

Fire Chief Robert Westerman said three fire trucks were too large for the roadway leading to the home, which was located at the end of a long private driveway.

Firefighters had to drag water lines a distance of more than 200 feet and tap into a stream for water.

Damage is estimated at $100,000. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
