Mid-Pacific halau sweeps school hula competition

Mid-Pacific Institute's hula halau Pupukahi I Ke Alo O Na Pua took the top prizes at the Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition Saturday at Kamehameha Schools.

The school's awards, all in the high school division, were kane division, 1st place; wahine division, 1st place; combined division, 1st place; Hawaiian language award; overall winner in the high school division.

The school also earned an invitation to the Prince Lot Hula Festival.

"For me personally, the competition is really an opportunity for growth in the students' abilities," said Kumu Hula Lanakila Casupang,"It challenges them to push their abilities and more importantly to work together as a group, to put aside differences and work towards a common goal."
