Entangled sea turtle rescued off Barbers Point

Advertiser Staff

A 60-pound sea turtle trapped in an abandoned fishing net was rescued Sunday by the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Marine Fisheries Service in the waters off Barbers Point.

The Olive Ridley turtle, listed as a "threatened" species under the Endangered Species Act, was treated by a veterinarian for minor injuries, tagged and released.

The turtle was spotted trapped in the net by a person on board the Kandie J., who called the Coast Guard.
