Seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star Jason Kidd and projected top draft picks Greg Oden and Kevin Durant were among eight players added today to the U.S. men's basketball team that is trying for an Olympic berth.

Also selected by USA Basketball to join the team were Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz, Tyson Chandler of the New Orleans Hornets, Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies and Tayshaun Prince of the Detroit Pistons.

The players announced today join 17 others previously named to the team and expected to play for the U.S. this year as it attempts to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

"We're not trying to put a collection of all-stars together, but our goal is to put together as good of a basketball team as we possibly can," coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a press release.

The U.S., which missed a chance to qualify for the Olympics with a third-place finish in last year's World Basketball Championship, can clinch a berth in Beijing by reaching the final in the Americas Championship tournament in Las Vegas in August and September.

Oden and Durant just completed All-American seasons as college freshmen. They both entered next month's National Basketball Association Draft, where they likely will be the top two picks. Portland and Seattle will draft 1-2.

"I think it will be a head start for me to be able to play with the best players in the world and practice with the best players in the world," Durant said on a media conference call. "I can't wait."

USA Basketball also said today that Gilbert Arenas, Joe Johnson, Brad Miller, Lamar Odom, Chris Paul, Paul Pierce and Dwyane Wade wouldn't be available to play for the team because of injuries.

USA Basketball will have a minicamp and exhibition game in Las Vegas from July 20-22, and will practice for the Americas Championship tournament from Aug. 13-21.
