DUI arrests up 14 percent on the Big Island

Big Island police arrested 44 motorists from May 8 to May 21 for drunk driving, raising the 2007 DUI total on the island to 489 compared to 430 over the same period last year.

From May 8 to May 14, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI, five who were involved in accidents and two who were under the age of 21.

From May 15 to May 21, 26 more DUI arrests were made — including four who were involved in traffic crashes and three who were under the age of 21.

There have been 817 major accidents on the Big Island so far this year compared with 1,001 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.
