Some 50,000 lei needed for Memorial Day services

Lei for Memorial Day services may be dropped off on Friday at designated community parks and fire stations on O'ahu, and the Parks Permit Office at the Fasi Municipal Building.

An estimated 50,000 fresh lei are needed for Memorial Day ceremonies at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and at all state veterans' cemeteries.

The lei are needed on Friday, and may be dropped off at designated community parks and fire stations on O'ahu, and the Parks Permit Office at the Fasi Municipal Building.

Loose plumeria flowers may be dropped off tomorrow at Waipahu District Park, Kailua District Park and Makua Alii Senior Center, 1541 Kalakaua Ave.

The 58th annual Mayor's Memorial Day Service will be held at 8:30 a.m. May 28 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Boy Scouts will place a lei at each grave to honor the memory of the fallen veterans and service members.

All lei must be made of fresh flowers or ti leaves and must measure 20 inches to 24 inches before tying. All lei must be tied. Floral sprays such as ti leaf and anthurium bouquets are also welcome.

Lei may be dropped off at the following O'ahu locations on Friday:

Community Parks (9 to 11:30 a.m.)

  • Ala Wai Community Park

  • Makua Alii Senior Center

  • Wai'anae District Park

  • Wahiawa District Park

  • Waiau District Park

  • Waipahu District Park

  • Kane'ohe Community and Senior Center

  • Waikiki Community Center

    Fire stations (6 a.m. to noon)

  • No. 6, Kalihi

  • No. 12, Waipahu

  • No. 14, Waialua

  • No. 17, Kane'ohe

  • No. 18, Kailua

  • No. 27, Waimanalo

  • No. 34, Hawai'i Kai
