Future of Kula hiking trails to be discussed

Advertiser Staff

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife's trails and access program is holding a public meeting to discuss current and future management of hiking trails within the Kula Forest Reserve on Maui.

Most trails are expected to reopen in July. Approximately 2,300 acres were burned in the Jan. 23 to Feb. 5 forest fire. The DLNR has since been working to remove burned trees along the road corridor that are hazardous. Tonight's meeting, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani, gives hikers a chance to offer their input on the trail designs, signage and sustainability.

For more information about the meeting, contact Torrie Nohara at (808) 873-3508.
