Linfield (McMinnville, Ore.), with freshman Candice Fujino (Konawaena 2006) starting at designated player, defeated Washington-St. Louis, 10-2, yesterday to capture its first NCAA Division III national softball title.

Fujino, who is from Kealakekua on the Big Island, batted 5 for 16 with two RBIs in six tournament games.

BASEBALL

  • Kansas freshman left-hander Wally Marciel ('Iolani '06) pitched 6 1/3 innings, his longest outing of the season, in a 4-2 loss to Nebraska Saturday in the Jayhawks' season finale.

Marciel walked the first batter he faced and then retired 12 of his next 13. He did not give up a base hit until the sixth inning. Marciel allowed three earned runs on three hits, with five strikeouts.

  • Shoreline Community College (Seattle) sophomore first/third baseman Cheynne Hirota (Waiakea '04) was named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges North first team as a utility player.

    Hirota, the team's clean-up hitter, batted .318.

Also on Shoreline's roster are freshman catcher Paul Domingo (Pearl City '05), sophomore outfielder Justin Goo (Roosevelt '04), sophomore left-hander Justin Kekaualua (Waiakea '05), freshman shortstop Markus Miyashiro (Moanalua '06), freshman first baseman Aaron Nakasone (Pearl City '06) and sophomore right-hander Kurt Silva (Kahuku '05).

Shoreline coach Steve Seki is a Saint Louis graduate. His father, Mel Seki, is the coach of the Pearl City baseball team that reached this year's state tournament championship game.

  • Lewis-Clark State senior infielder Ikaika Lester (Moloka'i '01) was 2-for-5 with six RBIs in a 15-11 win over Azusa Pacific Friday as Lewis-Clark State won the three-game NAIA West Coast Super Regional series.

Lester hit a two-out, three-run home run in the first inning.

Both teams received berths for the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series, a 10-team, double-elimination tournament hosted by Lewis-Clark State.

Azusa Pacific received a top seed and Lewis-Clark State a No. 3. By contractual agreement with the NAIA, the host cannot receive higher than the No. 3 seed.

  • Whittier senior Matt Morgado (Kamehameha '03 of Wahiawa) was selected to the SCIAC second team as an outfielder.

Morgado led the team with a .395 batting average, with 12 doubles, four home runs and 24 RBIs.

    The tournament concludes Friday.

Stanford sophomore Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) is tied for 39th after a 76.

Chun was earlier named to the Pac-10 Conference second team.
