Illness forces Jim Nabors to miss Sunday's Indy 500

Associated Press

Jim Nabors is back home in Hawai'i.

For most of the past 35 years, Nabors has sung "Back Home Again in Indiana" during pre-race ceremonies, but illness will force the 76-year-old actor-entertainer to miss Sunday's Indy 500.

This year, fans will serenade him instead.

Nabors is expected to address the crowd on Speedway video boards Sunday, then ask fans to sing in his place.

"We hope that the fans' rendition of 'Back Home Again in Indiana' serves as a get-well card to Jim from hundreds of thousands of his close friends here at the track," said Mari Hulman George, Indianapolis Motor Speedway chairman of the board, in a statement.
