Punahou's Ishida named Gatorade Player of the Year

Punahou junior Harrison "Jeeter" Ishida was named Gatorade Hawai'i Baseball Player of the Year.The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior right-hander compiled a 6-0 record and a 1.69 ERA this season, striking out 34 batters in 41.1 innings and earning one save. Ishida was named most outstanding player at the state baseball tournament despite playing with a sprained ankle. Ishida helped Punahou win its fourth straight state title.
Ishida also batted .306 this season with a homer and nine RBIs in 44 plate appearances.
Ishida has a 3.69 grade point average and is a member of his church's youth group and a senior acolyte at his parish. Ishida also volunteers as a counselor in Punahou's overnight camp programs.
"Jeeter is such an extreme competitor and that's what really makes him so good," said Punahou head coach Eric Kadooka in a press release. "He was absolutely perfect for us all year. He has an innate ability to rise above critical situations and when he does, the team rallies around him."
Ishida is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award to be announced in June.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes one winner in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia in football, girls volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track and field.
