Conservancy to fence in bog

Advertiser Staff

The Nature Conservancy, with funding from the Fish and Wildlife Service and private sources, plans to fence 80 acres of McBryde Sugar Co. land near Mt. Kahili.

The area, at an elevation of about 2,000 feet above Alexander Reservoir, is known as the Kanaele Bog or Swamp and is noted for its stunted native vegetation. It has been described as the best-preserved lowland native bog ecosystem in Hawai'i.

The goal of the fencing is to exclude pigs, which have been rooting up the native vegetation.

The Conservancy is seeking a state conservation district use permit and could begin work as early as August.
