Advertiser Staff

An autopsy is scheduled for today on the bodies of two men found yesterday in an apartment in the Nu'uanu area.

Police responding to a complaint of foul odor from residents in the apartment building found the decomposing bodies at 8:45 a.m.

Police said there was no evidence of foul play.

The case was classified as unattended deaths pending medical examiner's findings on the cause and manner of death.

MAN HAS BURNS OVER ENTIRE BODY

A man who apparently set himself on fire yesterday near a park bench at 1676 Ala Moana was taken in critical condition to Straub Clinic & Hospital with burns over 100 percent of his body.

A city ambulance returning to base was in the area and responded at 4:30 p.m., said Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

Police were investigating the incident.

CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED

The Honolulu medical examiner's office yesterday identified the man who died Friday from injuries suffered in a truck crash on Kalaeloa Boulevard as Alfred David Silva, 49, of Kapolei.

The cause of death is listed as "cranial cerebral injury" due to an accidental motor vehicle crash.

Silva was a passenger in a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by a 25-year-old man who police vehicular homicide investigators said was speeding and overtaking vehicles when it hit a high curb, went out of control and through a fence before overturning.

Silva was thrown from the truck.

The crash near Lauwiliwili Street occurred at 10:20 a.m.

Silva died Friday at The Queen's Medical Center at 4:55 p.m.

FIRE EXTINGUISHED AT '909 KAPIOLANI'

Firefighters yesterday extinguished a fire on the top floor of a building being constructed at the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapi'olani Boulevard.

The Fire Department's response to the "909 Kapiolani" construction site shortly before 4 p.m. caused a slowdown in traffic in the area.

No injuries were reported.

FORGERY, THEFT CHARGES PENDING

Police yesterday were investigating a Nu'uanu woman for allegedly stealing the identity of an elderly man for the purpose of taking his mail.

The woman, 43, was arrested Tuesday at the Kahala post office after authorities investigated a complaint from a 73-year-old man about missing mail.

The woman allegedly was in possession of a photo ID of herself in the man's name when arrested at the post office.

Police said the woman had asked post office workers to place the victim's mail on "vacation hold."

The woman was booked for investigation of felony offenses of forgery and unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, and of misdemeanor theft. Charges were pending.
