Ko Olina Golf Club is celebrating the third anniversary of American Express Women's Golf Week, which is aimed at increasing the participation of women in golf.
The club will host a women's golf clinic June 7, followed by a wine tasting and pupu hosted by Roy's Ko Olina. Check-in for the clinic will begin at 3 p.m., and the wine tasting will follow at 4:30 p.m. Cost is $35 and includes a donation to the American Heart Association.
During the week, Ko Olina will offer reduced rates for women. Green fees will be $50 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, for women with a Hawai'i ID. Women can book tee times by calling the golf shop at 676-5300.

CHARITY RECEIVES $70K
Friends of Hawai'i Charities and Ko Olina Charities received $70,000 from the LPGA's Fields Open in Hawai'i, held in February at Ko Olina Golf Club. Both 501 (c) 3 organizations focus on assisting Hawai'i's needy, from contributing to youth and community groups, to providing visitor industry educational and training opportunities for residents of the Leeward coast.
The Fields Open is sponsored by Fields Corp., a company established in 1988.
Under its corporate slogan, "The Greatest Leisure for All People," the core business is the design and production of game machines.
Stacy Prammanasudh won the 2007 Fields Open with a score of 14-under par 202.
WIE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Michelle Wie Travel Scholarships have been awarded to 27 members of the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association. Wie donated $50,000 to the HSJGA last year to help support members who travel to tournaments. Hawai'i events have qualified more than 160 juniors annually to compete in Mainland events, but some have not been able to take advantage of the opportunity because of the prohibitive cost.
"This scholarship levels the playing field for all junior golfers in Hawai'i and will help give them the same opportunities to play and compete as their counterparts on the Mainland," said HSJGA President Mary Bea Porter-King.
Scholarships help subsidize expenses to events.
GUTIERREZ HIRED
Juan Gutierrez has been appointed senior superintendent at Kapalua Resort. Gutierrez will be responsible for overseeing course maintenance, playability, renovations, staffing and budgeting for the golf courses and the Kapalua Golf Academy.
Gutierrez has 11 years of experience in golf course maintenance and management. He was superintendent at Doral Golf Resort and Spa and Ocean Reef Club in Florida and also worked at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
"Juan has tremendous experience with warm-season grasses and has recently been involved with major renovations with the Blue Monster at Doral," said Gary Planos, senior vice president/resort operations.
