Hawai'i's Weber out in tennis

University of Hawai'i's Andreas Weber bowed out in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Singles Championship yesterday in Athens, Ga.
Arkansas' Blake Strode beat Weber, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10).
"Andy showed a lot character today and I couldn't be more proud of him," Hawai'i coach John Nelson said. "It was a 3-hour match that went back-and-forth and he battled back numerous times."
Both players earned at-large invitations into the tournament and were closely ranked, with Strode 44th in the latest FILA/ITA rankings and Weber 48th. Weber, the first Rainbow Warrior in program history to earn a bid to the NCAAs, had two match points, but could not close the Strode out.
Weber, a native of Huenfeld, Germany, concluded his season with a 24-7 overall record.

ANE SERVICE MONDAY AT PUNAHOU SCHOOL
Services for Charles Ane will be Monday at Punahou School's Thurston Chapel.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The service will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Lunch will follow.
The family requests that no flowers be brought. Donations may be made to the Charlie Teetai Ane Endowed Scholarship, Punahou School.
Ane was a former All-Coast selection at USC and was a Pro Bowl selection at center for the Detroit Lions.

WILSON FALLS BACK INTO TIE FOR 31ST AT NCAAS
Amanda Wilson, a Waiakea High graduate now attending Stanford, shot a 6-over-par 78 yesterday to fall out of the top 10 after the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships at Daytona Beach, Fla.
Wilson shot a 1-over-par 73 in the first round and now is at 151 and tied for 31st.
Mari Chun, a Kamehameha Schools graduate also attending Stanford, shot a 6-over 78 and is at 154 and tied for 39th.
Kelly Nakashima, a Baldwin alum attending Idaho, shot a 78 as well and is at 158 and is alone at 100th.
Purdue's Christel Boeljon, who started the second round tied for sixth, took into a one-shot lead after shooting a 3-under-par 69
Duke maintained its lead in the team division, at 587. The Blue Devils are followed by UCLA (594), Purdue (597), Stanford (599) and USC (601).
The tournament, at the LPGA Legends International Course, concludes tomorrow.
VOLLEYBALL
HAWAI'I'S HAKALA EARNS ESPN HONOR
University of Hawai'i men's volleyball player Lauri Hakala was named yesterday to the ESPN The Magazine Academic District VIII Men's At-Large (University Division) second team as voted on by the College of Sports Information Directors of America.
Hakala, who majored in both speech and German, maintained a 3.69 (out of 4.00) cumulative grade point average while lettering three years for UH.
The native of Pieksamaki, Finland, was a 2005-06 District VIII first team selection while also garnering AVCA All-America honors.
UH-HILO TO HAVE TRYOUTS ON JUNE 16
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo will hold open tryouts for the women's volleyball team on June 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UHH gymnasium. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.
