MOKULE'IA
Fish size counts for freedivers

Advertiser Staff

The Gene Higa Memorial Tournament, a freediving event, will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at Mokule'ia's Army Beach.

The event, hosted by Hawaii Skin Diver magazine and Kai Clothing, involves two-man teams using their spearfishing and freedive skills to bag the biggest fish. Only one fish per team will be weighed, beginning at 1 p.m. One hundred competitors have signed up.

Higa died in 2004 when competing in the U.S. National Freedive Championship. The tournament honors divers who have died and promotes safety.

The awards and fundraiser party will be 6 to 11 p.m. Sunday at Rumours.
