Punahou baseball ranked 25th nationally; Ishida is top player

Four-time state champion Punahou is ranked No. 25 in the latest USA Today high school baseball Super 25, released Wednesday.

Seton Hall Prep of West Orange, N.J., is ranked No. 1 with a 26-1 record.

The Buffanblu are ranked No. 9 in the West region. Horizon (31-3) of Scottsdale, Ariz., is No. 1 in the West.

Punahou defeated Pearl City, 7-1, for the state title two weeks ago and finished the regular and postseason with a 17-1 record.

The Buffanblu are ranked No. 19 in this week's Student Sports National Fab 50.

Also, Punahou pitcher/third baseman Jeeter Ishida was named Gatorade Hawai'i Player of the Year.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior right-hander compiled a 6-0 record and a 1.69 ERA this season, striking out 34 batters in 41 1/3 innings and earning one save. Ishida won two games and was named Most Outstanding Player at the state tournament despite playing with a sprained left ankle.

Ishida also batted .306 this season with one home run and nine RBIs in 44 plate appearances.

Ishida has a 3.69 grade point average and is a member of his church's youth group and a senior acolyte at his parish. Ishida also volunteers as a counselor in Punahou's overnight camp programs.

CHUN TIES FOR 18TH PLACE

Stanford's Mari Chun, a Kamehameha alum, shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to finish tied for 18th at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Christel Boeljon of Purdue shot a 69 and finished at 3-under 210 for a five-stroke victory over USC's Paola Moreno. Chun finished at 225.

Arizona's Amanda Wilson, a Waiakea graduate, shot a 75—226 and was tied for 27th. Idaho's Kelly Nakashima, a Baldwin alum, finished at 78—236.

Duke won the team title by eight shots over Purdue.

CYR LEADS NAIA

Point Loma Nazarene University sophomore Sam Cyr, a 2005 King Kekaulike graduate, leads after the third round of the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship in Plymouth, Ind.

Cyr shot a 5-under-par 67 yesterday to finish with a 5-under 211 total, moving him up from a tie for eighth place. He leads David Tobon of Johnson & Wales (Fla.) by two strokes.

Cyr was an All-American last year after finishing 11th at the national championship.

The final round is today.

UH'S GAMMIE HONORED

University of Hawai'i senior golfer Dale Gammie was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 Team yesterday.

Gammie was named the Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year while leading the team in strokes per round average. The Pukalani, Maui, native had five top 10 finishes, including an individual title at the Heather Farr Memorial, the first for a UH player since 1986.

Gammie is a business major with a 3.93 GPA. She is a four-time all-WAC honoree, including three first-team honors.
