Kids to shadow tax department workers on Wednesday

Advertiser Staff

The children and grandchildren of state Department of Taxation employees will have a chance to observe a day in the life of a Hawai'i public servant from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Department director Kurt Kawafuchi will host a departmental celebration of Pride in Public Service. As part of the celebration, the children of more than 40 employees on O'ahu will visit the Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Building, at 830 Punchbowl St., to get a first-hand look at the services provided by the state Department of Taxation.

Similar events will take place as well on the Neighbor Islands. Th activity day, for children ages 5-13, will allow employees to share some of what they do with their families.

Younger children may take part in a scavenger hunt and bingo game while older children will have the opportunity to complete a simple tax return.

The goal is to help families understand what mom, dad and other family members do at work and to let department employees share their pride in public service, Kawafuchi said.
