Free soft drinks offered to designated drivers

Advertiser Staff

HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation kicks off its "D2" summer program this Memorial Day holiday weekend in which nearly 75 nightclubs, bars and restaurants statewide provide complimentary soft drinks to customers who choose to be designated drivers.

The DOT's Designated Driver or "D2" Campaign is a promotional partnership between the state, local radio stations and nighttime establishments frequented by young adults in an effort to promote the "Don't Drink and Drive" message. This annual summer campaign runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.

In 2006, there were 161 traffic fatalities in Hawai'i. Some 76 of them were alcohol-related and 77 involved speeding.

"We want to thank again the radio stations and the nighttime establishments for making this all possible during the '101 Days of Summer' between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend," said state Department of Transportation director Barry Fukunaga. "The ultimate player in all of this is the person behind the wheel, so hopefully this program will provide options for our drivers, particularly the younger ones."

Listed are radio stations and business establishments participating statewide in this summer's D2 program. An updated list of participating businesses will be sent out periodically throughout the summer.
