Dog rescued from fire that damaged Kula home

Maui News

KULA, Maui — Fire crews rescued a dog in a Kula house fire that caused an estimated $175,000 in damage on Friday night, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Jeff Shaffer said no one was injured in the fire that was reported at 8:37 p.m. at 651 Papipi Road, although the home's occupants, who were trying to put out the fire with garden hoses, had to be evacuated by police.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, Shaffer said.

When fire crews arrived, the second story of the three-bedroom home was burning, he said. The fire crews were able to confine the fire to 40 percent of the home, Shaffer said.

When firefighters learned the family's pet was trapped on the second level, he said a Kahului rescue crew was able to get to the dog and carry it to safety.

"The guys did a great job," he said.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $100,000, while damage to contents was estimated at $75,000.

Shaffer said the family was displaced by the fire and is staying with relatives. He said a husband and wife were in the home when the fire began.

Fire crews arrived at 8:50 p.m., within 13 minutes of receiving the alarm. The fire was under control at 9:25 p.m. and extinguished at 12:11 a.m.

The Kula and Makawao engine companies, along with the Kahului rescue crew and Kahului water tanker responded to the fire. Shaffer said a fire investigator also went to the scene.
