Fujikawa falls short of qualifying for U.S. Open

Advertiser Staff

There will be no "Menehune Mania" at this year's U.S. Open.

Tadd Fujikawa, who became the youngest to qualify for an Open last year at 15 and wowed the galleries by making the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, failed to earn one of three berths at a U.S. Open sectional qualifier today at Ohtone Country Club in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.

The 16-year-old Moanalua High sophomore shot 78-75—153 to finish at 9-over par for his two rounds at the Ohtone East Course.

Kaname Yokoo and Toru Taniguchi tied for medalist honors at 142. Nobuhiro Masuda earned the third and final spot after shooting a 143.

Fujikawa had six bogeys and 12 pars in his opening round.

In the second round, Fujikawa had two bogeys, a double bogey and a birdie.

The U.S. Open will be June 11 to 17 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.

The sectional in Japan is the first of 14 sectional qualifiers.
