WAILUKU, Maui — A 31-year-old Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a head-on crash last night on Mill Street in Wailuku.

Police said Ray Wilhelm of Wailuku was driving a 1991 Toyota Camry west on Mill Street at about 10:45 p.m. when he crossed the center line and collided with a 2006 Dodge Dakota pickup that had just turned left from North Market Street.

Wilhelm, one of Maui's top prep athletes while attending Baldwin High School in early 1990s, died later at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The 21-year-old Wailuku man who was driving the pickup suffered only minor injuries from shattered glass. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and released. There have been eight traffic deaths in Maui County this year compared with six a year ago.
