Modest gain on Wall Street amid series of takeovers

Stocks eked out a modest gain Tuesday as investors bought cautiously amid a series of new takeover deals and upbeat consumer confidence figures. However, trading was erratic with the minutes from the Federal Reserve's last meeting scheduled to be released Wednesday.

  • The Dow rose 14.06, or 0.10 percent, to 13,521.34.

  • The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 2.38, or 0.16 percent, to 1,518.11.

  • The Nasdaq composite index added 14.87, or 0.58 percent, to 2,572.06.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 1,058.19, or 8.49 percent.

  • The S&P is up 99.81, or 7.04 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 156.77, or 6.49 percent.
