Iolani alum Ian Mopas to sign with Twins

Advertiser Staff

Left-handed pitcher Ian Mopas, a 2005 Iolani School graduate, has agreed to terms and is expected to sign with the Minnesota Twins, according to Twins scout Dan Cox.

Mopas, drafted in the 26th round out of Iolani in 2005 by the Twins and again in the 30th round after his freshman year at Goldwin West JC, is on his way to Fort Myers, Fla., site of the Twins training quarters, where he is expected to sign.

He is in a group of the last draft-and-follows, or players drafted, allowed to play the coming season at a JC, evaluated again and then signed before the next draft. New rules for this year's draft forces teams to sign players by Aug. 15, essentially ending the draft-and-follow process. Previously, JC players signed had until a week before the next draft to sign with the club that drafted him the previous draft. That deadline for last year's players is tomorrow.
