Environmentalists mark 'Dependence Day' in Waikiki

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i members of Environmental Action will today hold a "Dependence Day" event from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Waikiki area.

The group will be seeking signatures for a petition that aims to help end the United States' dependence on oil. Dependence Day marks the day on which the nation becomes effectively dependent on foreign oil for the remainder of the year, according to the environmental group.

Activists will deliver the petition and signatures to presidential candidates and ask them to support doubling the national gas mileage standard.

Today's event will be held on the grass across the street from the Sunset on the Beach area in Waikiki.
