Anthropologist gets hibiscus named after him

Advertiser Staff

Yosihiko Sinoto, Bishop Museum's renowned Hawaiian and Pacific studies anthropologist, was presented with a rare hibiscus hybrid plant named in his honor and recently registered with the American Hibiscus Society. The new hybrid was created by Jill Coryell, who has created more than 7,000 new types in the past seven years.

The flowers of the new "Sir Yosihiko Sinoto" are blue-red.

A hibiscus planting ceremony was held at the May monthly museum staff meeting. Coryell's new hybrid was planted near the flagpoles marking the entrance to Bishop Museum.
