Donald Johanos, 79, who for 15 years served as conductor and music director of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, died May 29 in Naples, Fla. He had been ill for some time, according to his son-in-law DJ McDonald. Johanos is survived by his wife, Jane, three daughters and a son.

The Iowa-born Johanos, who retired at the end of the 1993-'94 symphony season in the midst of a troubled period for the orchestra, had lived in Naples since 1997. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Corrine, who died in 2001.

Hawaii Public Radio will pay tribute to the late maestro today with host Gene Schiller playing Johanos recordings from 10 a.m. to noon on KHPR FM 88.1.

McDonald said the family is settling details for a memorial service and a scholarship fund will be set up in Johanos' name. Details are forthcoming.
