Ex-prep star dies in Maui car crash

WAILUKU, Maui — Ray Wilhelm, one of the state's top prep athletes while attending Baldwin High School in the early 1990s, died yesterday following a head-on crash on Mill Street in Wailuku.

Police said Wilhelm, 31, of Wailuku, was driving a 1991 Toyota Camry west on Mill Street about 10:45 p.m. Monday when he crossed the center line and collided with a 2006 Dodge Dakota pickup that had just turned left from North Market Street.

Wilhelm was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. yesterday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The 21-year-old Wailuku man who was driving the pickup suffered minor injuries from shattered glass. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and released.

Police said it appears that Wilhelm was wearing a shoulder restraint but not a lap belt.

Wilhelm, who graduated from Baldwin in 1994, was a Maui Interscholastic League all-star in both football and basketball and was named to the 1994 Nissan Hall of Honor, an elite selection of the state's top 12 seniors recognized for their contributions on and off the field.

Wilhelm went on to play football at De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif.

At Baldwin, he was the starting point guard all four of his years there, said his former basketball coach, Jon Garcia.

"He wasn't a very big person but he was very quick and shifty," said Garcia, who retired last year as Baldwin's athletic director.

"I think his biggest attribute was that he just loved to play all the sports that he played. It's hard to find athletes like him here. He excelled at everything."

Baldwin athletic director Kahai Shishido said, "He's a really fun-loving, easygoing guy. He was the life of the party, very personable."
