Survey ranks Honolulu 8th in job growth nationwide

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu ranked eighth among large American cities in information and transportation employment growth, according to a new survey by Inc. magazine.

The magazine examined published statistical information on employment growth nationwide. In information and transportation, Honolulu moved up to No. 8, from 26 last year. That move earned Inc.'s title of "Biggest Mover." Because of that, Honolulu — last year designated as a midsize city (150,000 to 450,000 jobs)— now has been classified a large-size city (job base of a least 450,000 jobs).

Ranking for the study was calculated by using the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reports on employment data and the North American Industry Classification System, analyzing prior year and current year's employment growth rates; midterm growth: average annual 2001-2006 growth rate; long-term trend since 1995, and current year growth.

"This is great recognition for Honolulu," said Mayor Mufi Hannemann. "The ranking confirms that we're on the right track with our efforts to improve Honolulu's economy, and I've always said, as Honolulu goes, so goes the state of Hawaii.
