Hawai'i's hotel occupancy rate continues to dip

Advertiser Staff

The number of visitors to Hawai'i hotels in April continued a recent downward slide as occupancy fell by 5.9 percentage points to 71.1 percent compared to the same month last year.

The latest figures come from a report released today by Hospitality Advisors LLC. Coupled with a slowdown of increases in hotel room rates, that means revenue from the hotel rooms also declined overall by 3.6 percent.

Statistics show a continuing slowdown in tourism after two record-breaking years for arrivals. State officials said overall visitor arrivals also are declining.

Hospitality Advisors president Joseph Toy said occupancy was highest on O'ahu, followed by Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island. He said the decreases went across the gamut of accommodations, from budget hotels through luxury.
