UH football team will play 12-game schedule, maybe

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i football team will play only a 12-game season this year, foregoing a possible 13th contest unless one of two Division I-A schools agree to a nationally televised game at Aloha Stadium, the school announced today.

UH has open dates on Oct. 20 and Nov. 3, one of which could have been used to accommodate a home or road game had an opponent been found.

"We have two Division I-A schools considering proposals that include an ESPN telecast at Aloha Stadium," UH athletic director Herman Frazier said.

"If neither accepts the offer, we will play a 12-game schedule."

Frazier had said in December that the Warriors would play a complete 13-game schedule but two weeks ago told the Legislature that the end of May was a "drop dead" deadline for securing a 13th game.

UH played 13 regular games last year under the first year of an NCAA rule change and was permitted to play the same number this year.
