TE L.J. Smith has sports hernia surgery

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles tight end L.J. Smith had surgery for a sports hernia yesterday and will miss the team's final minicamp next week.

Smith's status for training camp is uncertain. Veterans are scheduled to report on July 30. A sports hernia ended quarterback Donovan McNabb's season after nine games in 2005. Dr. William Meyers, the surgeon who operated on McNabb, performed Smith's surgery.

The 27-year-old Smith is entering the final year of his contract. He had 50 catches for 611 yards and five touchdowns last season. A second-round pick in 2003, Smith has 172 receptions for 1,991 yards and 14 TDs in four seasons in the NFL.
