UH's Kalima, Hakala get academic honors

University of Hawai'i men's volleyball players Eric Kalima and Lauri Hakala have been named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team.

Kalima, a senior libero, earned a 3.31 GPA in sociology. The Kamehameha Schools graduate played both libero and outside hitter this past season, averaging 2.31 digs in 94 games.

Hakala, a senior opposite hitter, earned a 3.72 GPA in speech and German. The graduate of Pieksamaen Lukio in Finland led the Warriors with 4.35 kills per game.


TENNIS

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TWO

Kapa'a High School senior Kelli Okamoto and 'Iolani senior Sara Yoshinaga were awarded $5,000 college scholarships by the United States Tennis Association Tennis & Education Foundation and Mass-Mutual Foundation.

They were two of 35 winners selected from the United States and Puerto Rico on the basis of academics, community service and tennis.

Yoshinaga was the girls singles runner-up at this year's state tennis tournament. Okamoto lost in the first round of the girls doubles tournament.

Okamoto is ranked first in her class at Kapa'a and is a member of the Key, Japanese and Interact clubs. She also volunteers at Princeville Public Library and was the recipient of the Girl's Statewide Athletic Award last year.

Yoshinaga volunteers with the USTA Hawai'i section and was the recipient of the Eddie Hamada Sportsmanship Award from 'Iolani. Yoshinaga was awarded the Jim Howe Sportsmanship Award from USTA Hawai'i last year.


BASKETBALL

HPU SIGNS PAIR

Hawai'i Pacific has signed two players for next season, women's basketball coach Jeff Harada announced.

Emily Kreutter, a 5-foot-8 swing player from Foothill Community College (Los Altos Hills, Calif.), and Erica Hansen, a 5-3 point guard from Tigard (Ore.) High School, will play for the Sea Warriors.

Kreutter averaged five rebounds, three points, two assists and 1.5 steals per game at Foothill, where she was named the team's best defender and also earned scholar-athlete recognition.

Hansen, a three-year starter, averaged nine points and six assists. She was a team captain and earned all-league second-team honors.


BASEBALL

PUNAHOU RISES TO NO. 17

Four-time baseball state champion Punahou climbed two spots to No. 17 in the Student Sports National Fab 50 high school rankings.

The Buffanblu, who finished 29-3, are sandwiched between No. 16 South Caldwell (Hudson, N.C.) and No. 18 Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif.). Horizon (Scottsdale, Ariz.) is No. 1.
