Jake Shimabukuro, youth symphony concert Sunday

Youth Symphony I, an orchestra for students in Hawaii, will join ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and Island favorites Noel Okimoto on drums and Dean Taba on bass at "He Makana O Na Mele: The Gift of Music," the annual benefit concert for the Hawaii Youth Symphony.

The concert takes place on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom. The evening begins with a silent auction at 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. The concert takes place at 7 p.m. Maestro Henry Miyamura conducts.

The Hawaii Youth Symphony, parent organization of Youth Symphony I, is Hawaii's only statewide youth orchestra program. HYS operates three full symphonic orchestras and four string orchestras during the academic year, serving more than 400 students. It also offers summer programs.

Youth Symphony I incorporates 89 performers from 26 schools on Oahu, Kauai, the Big Island and Maui.
