Volleyball: Ex-UH player leads U.S. over Peru

HAMAMATSU, Japan -- Logan Tom scored a team-high 13 points and former University of Hawaii star Heather Bown added 11 today as the United States defeated Peru in straight sets on the opening day of the volleyball Women's World Cup.

Tom spiked for nine points and scored three blocking as the U.S. downed Peru 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 in the first round.

Tayyiba Haneef-Park added 11 points for the Americans in the match that lasted 71 minutes.

"We were very energetic and the first game is usually difficult, but we played well," said Tom, who returned to the national team after playing beach volleyball.

The United States faces Cuba on Saturday.

In other first-round matches, Cuba coasted to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-20 win over Kenya, and Brazil beat Poland 25-12, 25-20, 25-22.

In Tokyo, Italy cruised to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-16 win over Thailand, and Serbia defeated South Korea 25-21, 25-23, 25-15.

The tournament features 12 teams bidding for three berths at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The men's tournament will also be held in Japan from Nov. 18-Dec. 2.
