Hawaii Baptist wins DII girls state volleyball crown

Sarah Palmer had 11 kills and C'era Oliveira added nine as Hawai'i Baptist beat Seabury Hall, 25-17, 25-16, in the final of the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball Division II State Championships tonight at McKinley.

Hawai'i Baptist, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and No. 1 seed, ended the match on a 10-1 run. Palmer had four kills during the spurt, including the final three points of the match.

The Eagles had 20 kills and four hitting errors in the game, and hit .348.

The ILH has won all three Division II state tournaments. Saint Francis won in 2005 and Sacred Hearts in 2006.

Seabury Hall, the Maui Interscholastic League champion and No. 2 seed, failed to become the first team from Maui to win a girls state volleyball title. The first tournament was played in 1969.

Hawai'i Baptist (17-4) went on an 11-3 run to take a 15-7 lead in the first game. The Spartans got within 20-16, but the Eagles went on a game-ending 5-1 run aided by three hitting errors.

Hawai'i Baptist had 10 kills and six hitting errors for the game, while Seabury Hall had five kills and nine hitting errors. The Spartans also were called for five double-contacts.

Hawai'i Baptist hit .263, while Seabury Hall hit .048 for the match. Alex Bolduc had five kills to lead Seabury Hall (14-1).
