Preps: No. 4 Baldwin blasts King Kekaulike

By Robert Collias
The Maui News

WAILUKU — The last time these two teams met in a November game, both were headed deep into their state tournaments and they played a thriller that was decided on the final play.

It was an entirely different story last night at War Memorial Stadium for the Baldwin and King Kekaulike high school football teams. The Bears, state Division I semifinalists each of the past two seasons as champions of the Maui Interscholastic League and ranked fourth in The Advertiser poll, felt they needed to make a statement that their spread offense was ready to break out for the first time this season.

Mark that mission accomplished.

Behind five touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Helle, the Bears rolled past Na Ali'i 46-0.

The Bears improved to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the MIL. King Kekaulike, the state Division II champions last year, finished 3-6 (3-4 MIL). Last season, the Bears beat Na Ali'i in the last game of the regular season, 25-22, on a final-play field goal.

Two of the touchdown passes last night went to Chase Nakamura, who caught 20 scoring passes from Helle last season in 12 games. Nakamura caught four passes for 145 yards.

"We finally got everybody back and were at 100 percent,'' Helle said to The Maui News. "I told Chase it had been too long since I threw one to him.''

Nakamura made his 2007 debut two weeks ago after missing the first six games of the season with a knee injury. He didn't catch a touchdown pass in the first game and last week Helle sat out with a sore shoulder.

Baldwin rolled up 272 yards in the first half on the way to a 33-0 lead at the halftime break that was 20 minutes long to celebrate the Bears' homecoming. Baldwin had 14 first downs in the first 24 minutes of play, while limiting Na Ali'i to three.

Kekaulike had 48 total yards in the first half, 29 of which came on two scrambles by quarterback Corry Roy in the final drive of the second quarter.

While Helle was completing his first nine passes, Roy was harassed into a 2-for-11 performance for minus-2 yards when the game was still in any doubt. Roy finished 5-for-14 for 4 yards.

Helle finished 13-for-21 for 318 yards and the five touchdowns even though the league's touchdown leader, Skyler Cabacungan, was on the Mainland for a baseball camp.

"Even though we didn't have Skyler, everybody else stepped up,'' Helle said.

Coach A.J. Roloos said that was exactly the idea as the Bears prepare for their state quarterfinal against the third-place team from the O'ahu Interscholastic Association in two weeks at War Memorial.

"That was our whole goal coming into this game,'' Roloos said. "We wanted to make a statement that we can score some points. I worked all week on Jordan's mechanics and you saw it tonight. I told him before the game, 'I need you to have a big game tonight.' He was due for one. He is a tough kid and he could have had more yardage.''

Nakamura caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Helle on the Bears' first possession to give Baldwin a 7-0 lead with 7 minutes, 18 seconds left in the first quarter. That play capped an eight-play, 64-yard drive.

Three minutes later, Chansi Bolosan scored on an 11-yard touchdown run.

Nakamura looked to be back at full strength when he caught a 54-yard dart from Helle in stride to score with 5:05 left in the first half.

Kalei Kamahele, who had a touchdown catch earlier in the quarter, returned a punt 67 yards for another score with 3:10 to go before intermission.
