Bull riding: McBride wins second PBR title in a row

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Justin McBride won his second PBR world title today, scoring 92.25 points on Camo to finish second in the final round of the PBR World Finals.

McBride, also the 2005 champion, had one of only three successful rides in the 15-man eighth round. J.B. Mauney won the round with a 92.75 on Copperhead Slinger, and Brazil's Guilherme Marchi had a 90.5 on Savage Shaker.

McBride finished fifth in the eight-round event standings to earn 1,942 bonus points, the deciding points in the season race.

The Elk City, Okla., cowboy finished the season with 14,820.25 points and earnings of $1,860,321.26 — including a $1 million bonus as the season champion.

"That's why I entered this sport. To be the best at it," McBride said. "But things in my life have changed since then. That's how I felt then (when he won his first World Championship), so this year was nothing but icing on the cake for me. I think it was the most fun year I ever had."

Marchi was second at 12,751.75 and $453,594.96, followed by Mauney at 12,689 and $560,635.25, and Wiley Petersen at 10,400.25 and $419,172.21. Petersen topped the event standings, earning $225,000.

After being bucked off in the first three rounds at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, McBride made four successful rides in five rounds at Thomas & Mack Center after discarded the tape on his dislocated left shoulder.

"After falling off the first three in a row and the other guys behind me doing really well, I kind of had to forget about the world title and the average," McBride said. "I had to go and kill myself. I want to try and win each and every go-round. That first week was horrible, but you've got to put it behind you."

Petersen was one of only two riders with six successful rides on eight bulls.

"I felt good all week," Petersen said. "I'm not hurting. I'm not sore. I'm just having fun. Everything came together."
