KAILUA — About an acre of Kailua Beach Park has been flooded by today's storm and 10 to 15 homes were flooded as emergency crews deployed hundreds of sand bags to keep the rainwater off of Kawailoa Road and out of more homes.

Kailua Beach Park was closed after rainwater flooded the Lanikai end of the beach park and covered the park's pavilions.

Honolulu firefighters said the flooding began shortly after 8 a.m. Debris is blocking the drainage in the park, officials said, but the road is open to motorists.

City officials warned people to stay out of nearby Kaelepulu Street.

Heavy rains also caused a sewer manhole to flood at Keolu Drive and Hele Street, causing 11,200 gallons of sewage to overflow, city spokesman Bill Brennan said.

Nineteen Hawaiian Telcom residential telephone customers were also without service since this morning, spokeswoman Ann Nishida said.

Crews continue to work on restoring service this afternoon, Nishida said.

"It could be weather related, it could be something else," Nishida said.
