Ceremony for Kalakaua's birthday in Waikiki Nov. 16

A ceremony honoring the 171st birthday of King David Kala¯kaua will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, November 16, 2007, at King Kalakaua Park in Waikiki. The public is invited to attend the free program, which will take place in front of the King Kalakaua statue. The ceremony includes live entertainment, dance performances and more.

The ceremony is presented by The Free and Accepted Masons of Hawai'i and the Lodge Le Progres de I 'Oceanie. For more information, call 699-4940.

Kalakaua was born on Nov. 16, 1836 and ruled from 1874 to 1891, when he died in San Francisco. During his reign, 'Iolani Palace was constructed.
