Power disruptions for 8,500 on Big Island

About 8,500 Hawaii Electric Light Company customers on the Big Island saw power disruptions yesterday and this morning due to generator problems and power lines damaged by falling trees.

The problems started at 3:49 p.m. yesterday when a generator at the Hamakua Energy Partners went off line, disrupting service to 4,000 customers around the Big Island, HELCO officials said. Power was restored at 3:52 p.m.

At 8:48 p.m., another 3,000 customers from Papaikou to Honokaa lost power when trees along Highway 19 near Kolekole Bridge fell and damaged power lines. Service was restored to 2,700 customers by 11:37 p.m. All but five of the remaining customers had power restored by 1:59 a.m. this morning.

Another 1,500 customers in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates and Ranchos lost power at 10:05 p.m. when trees fell along Highway 11 and damaged power lines near mile marker 83 fell. Power was restored by 5:45 a.m. today.
