Flash flood watch in effect for Oahu, Kauai

Advertiser Staff

The weather system that slammed into the state over the weekend will bring more rain through tonight, the National Weather Service said.

Two parts of the storm are currently hovering in waters off Hawai'i, one to the east of the Big Island and one to the south of Kaua'i, bringing unstable weather, rain and possibly more thunderstorms, said Maureen Ballard, National Weather Service forecaster.

"We'll see more showers," Ballard said. "We started off the day clear here on O'ahu and Kaua'i. We're kind of in between these two areas now. Some stuff is coming on shore now. There's rain now in Kailua."

A flash flood watch for O'ahu and Kaua'i is in place through tonight.

The huge weekend storm dumped more than 10 inches of rain on parts of O'ahu over the past 24 hours, caused two boulders to crash into homes, flooded homes in Kailua and overwhelmed storm drains around the island.

Flooding was particularly bad in Kailua. Firefighters yesterday worked pumps to remove flood waters to prevent damage to people's homes on Kawailoa Street and near Buzz's Original Steak House.

Residents claim that the flooding was caused when run-off inundated Ka'elepulu Stream, which couldn't flow to the ocean because the mouth of the stream was clogged with sand.
