NFL: Cowboys activate Tank Johnson

Associated Press

IRVING, Texas — Tank Johnson was activated by the Dallas Cowboys today, after completing an eight-game suspension, and is set to play his first game with his new team.

Coach Wade Phillips said Johnson had been added to the 53-man roster and would play Sunday for the NFC East-leading Cowboys (7-1) at the New York Giants. Johnson had been on the reserve-suspended list since Sept. 19, the day after he signed a two-year deal with Dallas.

"He will be part of our rotation," Phillips said. "I think he'll help us."

Johnson wasn't available for comment today after Phillips gave the players the day off. The Cowboys were coming off a 38-17 victory at Philadelphia last night.

Dallas made room on its roster by placing rookie fullback Deon Anderson on injured reserve with a torn right rotator cuff. Anderson got an MRI today. He got hurt early in the second half against the Eagles, but finished the game.

While Johnson's NFL suspension wasn't shortened, he was allowed to start practicing with the Cowboys two weeks ago.

Johnson spent two months in jail during the offseason because of weapons charges, both old and new.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Johnson for eight games in June. Weeks later, Johnson got pulled over for speeding at 3:30 a.m. The Chicago Bears released him soon after, though there were no charges filed in that incident.
